Olodum is a cultural group based in the city of Salvador de Bahía, the state capital of Bahia, Brazil. As cultural activities it proposes activities for the most part around music; Also offers productions of Afro dance theater, singing, choir, cultural computing, and musical activities for children. Founded in 1979, its stated objectives are to combat racism, foster self-esteem and pride among Afro-Brazilians, and fight for the civil rights of all marginalized groups.

While the origin of the dance is attributed to the bird tikling, there is another legend that origin persists. It has its roots in the Spanish occupation, when the Spanish seized the farms and forced the former owners to work them. According to this Legend, as punishment for working too slowly, workers were forced to stand while their feet were struck with freshly cut bamboo sticks. To avoid bruised and bloody feet, workers practiced dodging bamboo canes, creating Movements that eventually became the Tinikling dance.
